Henry no pensaba cantar.

🇬🇧 English version
Una Birra Con: reopened its bar on Friday, October 23, after almost a year off, and getting to that stool took some sweat. The vote was one for the books: for days, Protocol Shift and UMBRA kept snatching first place from each other, and anyone checking in rarely found the same band on top. Final count: 297 to 279. That’s an eighteen-vote margin, and close to six hundred votes across all three bands, with The Stein joining the party too. A toast to UMBRA and The Stein: without them there would have been no race. And a lesson for every band reading this: when a band gets moving and its people show up, it shows. That’s what this bar is for.
The stool went to Protocol Shift, who joined live with Henry Castillo (guitar, vocals), Adrián Davó (bass) and Víctor Toledo (drums), the latter running on painkillers and giving it everything anyway. Guitarist Borja Davó couldn’t make it.
It all started when Henry and Borja left their previous band, took a break and came back with one rule: make music with lifelong friends, no rush, just for the fun of it. Henry never meant to sing. They spent months looking for a vocalist until one candidate asked him, «why don’t you sing?» Vocal lessons came later, sparked by a shirtless guy doing growls at an acoustic set at the Leyendas del Rock festival.
«Recode» was recorded at home: instruments in each member’s house, vocals in their rehearsal room over three mornings, because Henry worked afternoons. Mixing and mastering are by Mario Lérida. They tuned down to drop B, and it stuck. Adrián designed the cover himself, with no AI involved. The video was shot in an abandoned quarry near Villamarchante and directed by the singer of Mugen Zero, Víctor’s other band.
They also got serious: merch as the lifeline of touring, how little streaming pays, and their choice to grow organically, letting people find them one gig at a time. That’s a philosophy this bar knows well.
Next up: November 6 at Zulú Klub (Aldaia). The very next night UMBRA, their «rival» in the vote, plays the same stage. In the band’s own words: comrades, not rivals. And there’s a surprise in store for January at the same venue.
«Recode» is playing on The Beerman Club Radio and is up for Song of the Month until October 30.
Want to be the next band at the bar? The November call opens early next month at Una Birra Con:. (The interview is in Spanish.)
